History of Homer

In 1896, Homer Pennock, a mining company promoter arrived. He built mining bunkhouses and a post office and shortly thereafter, his name became associated with the area. The Native Alaskans, the Dena'ina, called the Homer Spit “Uzintin” meaning it “extends out into the distance”.

Settlers soon utilized the area for their searches for gold and coal. The Homer Spit is a natural formation that is constantly eroding, however, the folks that inhabit the area continue to maintain it to prevent further erosion.

Located in the Southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula, the Spit is 4.5 miles long that extends out into the Kachemak Bay surrounded by its deep-water harbor. Commercial fisherman and boaters out for recreation make this their prime port of call. The shallow waters cater to the beachgoers and shoppers.

Homer has a man-made “fishing hole”: The Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon. Take in a little bit of history at the most recognized landmark in Homer, the Salty Dawg Saloon. Whether you are fishing, shopping, exploring, relaxing, there is something for everyone here. Enjoy!
